Rental Equipment, Redefined

Denso worked with Mesh to achieve their goal of improving MovinCool® machines’ utilization by their rental fleet customers and generate new revenue by unlocking previously inaccessible data and insights. 
NEED

Connected Cooling

Denso’s MovinCool® product line is the world’s leading spot cooling solution. These portable air-handling units have a variety of uses including spot cooling in data centers, keeping a cool environment in VIP tents at outdoor sporting events, and, of course, coming to the rescue when a central AC system breaks. In general, MovinCool® units are sold by Denso to networks of dealers that lease them out to the end user on an as-needed basis. 
 
As the IoT digital revolution began to take shape, MovinCool® product owners realized that a connected machine would enable Denso to offer more value-added services to their dealer networks. Denso was working closely with Sprint who recommended that they reach out to Mesh Systems to build their next generation product line.
 
Over the next few months, Mesh developed a solution that could answer MovinCool®’s most important telematics questions: Where is the machine? Is it on and properly functioning? Does the water tank need to be emptied? Has the machine fallen over? And much more!
SOLUTION

Insight Into Location, Usage Data, and Performance Metrics

Mesh Systems developed a two-part hardware solution that allowed Denso to answer their telematics questions, one which uses current analysis to report on internal MovinCool®  circuitry, the other which ascertains GPS location and backhauls the data to the cloud on the Sprint Cat-1 network.

Devices

The team at Mesh implemented an LTE Cat-1 gateway with global GPS and sensor complement. This included an electrical current analysis board to provide Denso’s desired usage insights. The small, wireless temperature sensors report on MovinCool® effectiveness for large deployments.

Cloud Solution

To show Movin’ Cool use, location, and health status, a multi-tenant portal for rental dealers is used, including asset performance dashboards for OEM insights and further product enhancements.
OUTCOMES

Results​

The connected MovinCool® set the stage for a new subscription-based product to offer better service to Denso’s customers.

New Revenue Stream

Denso was able to pivot to a new subscription-based business model built around a new, connected product.

User Accountability

The benefit wasn’t one way: rental dealers are able to hold their end users accountable for proper use of the machines and reduce asset leakage.

Up-Sell Opportunities

The wireless temperature sensors enable dealers to up-sell more machines when the data indicates that more spot cooling is needed.
